QUALITY INDEX OF DRINKING WATER FROM DIFFERENT SOURCES IN GOMBE TOWN, NORTHERN NIGERIA

Abstract


This study was aimed to evaluate the quality of drinking water from four different sources in Gombe town, Nigeria. The water samples were collected from borehole, well, pipe borne and sachet water. They were analyzed using Water Quality Index (WQI) technique. Fifteen physico-chemical parameters were used to calculate the Water Quality Index (WQI); such as pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity, chlorides, sulphate, phosphate, nitrate, nitrite, calcium, magnesium, total hardness, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, total dissolved solids and total suspended solids. The results of Water Quality Index (WQI) obtained from different water sources were found to be within ecxellent and good. The results revealed that the water quality status of the water samples analysed from all sources were suitable for drinking and for other domestic activities.
