STUDIES ON THE CHLORINATION OF IMIDAZOLE

Abstract

This study reports the optimisation of the Lutz and DeLorenzo method for the chlorination of imidazole. The isolated product was characterised after purification by its melting point, TLC, FT-IR, GC-MS, H-NMR, and C-NMR. The structure assigned agrees with the spectral data obtained. The  FT-IR result showed N-H peak at 3371cm-1 for secondary amines, C=N at 1643cm-1 for cyclic --unsaturation and C=C at 1559cm-1 for pyrroles, while the 1H-NMR showed relevant peaks at 9.3ppm and 15.0ppm for hydrogens attached to C2 and N-H respectively. 13C-NMR showed C2 carbon at 134.5ppm and the MS showed molecular ion peak (M+) at 136. The effect of varied concentrations of the chlorination agent on imidazole was monitored by UV-Visible spectroscopy and subsequently used to quantify the 4,5-Dichloroimidazole(DCI) in the crude product mixture without isolation and its yield calculated.
