Abstract

Potential uses of metal complexes of curcumin and chitosan as new antimicrobial drugs were investigated. The cross-linking of chitosan and curcumin as well as their complexation with cobalt, nickel and silver ions were carried out in solution. Metal complexes of the individual ligands were also prepared. All the products and ligands were characterised using micro analytical techniques, UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopy. Spectra from the UV-Vis and FTIR confirmed the interaction of the metals with the single and mixed ligands. The products and constituents were tested against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli using the plate agar diffusion method. The metal complexes showed comparable activities against the microbes with better activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Keywords: Chitosan, Curcumin, Crosslinking, Antimicrobial
