Abstract

Four dibutyltin (IV) derivatives of ethanedioic and butanedioic acid with Na and K metals were synthesized by reacting NaOH and KOH separately with ethanedioic acid and butanedioic acid to give the ligands: L1 (NaHC2O4), L2 (KHC2O4), L3 (Na2H4C4O4) and L4 (KH5C4O4) followed by reacting each ligand with Bu2SnO. The complexes were purified by recrystallization and purity checked by their melting point. Characterization of the complexes was done using FTIR and screened for their antimicrobial activity against ten strains of fungi: Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus nigre, Fusarium sp, Monascus ruber, Microsporum canis, Microsporum nanum, Mucor mucedor, Penicillium helicium, Trichophyton rubrium and Trichoderma viriole. Some absorption band in the IR spectrum of the ligands shifted to either lower or higher wave number in the complexes indicating that the carbonyl oxygen were involved in coordination of the metal ions. Their modes of coordination were found to be bidendate since their ∆υ values obtained were less than 200 cm-1.  The antifungal result showed that the dibutyltin (IV) complexes with the metal potassium exhibited slightly more inhibitory activity against the microbes than those with the metal Na and both of them exhibited more activity than even the control drugs: fluconazole and ketoconazole. Keywords: Dibutyltin (IV) derivatives, metal ethanedioate, metal butanedioate, spectroscopy, antifungal.
