SYNTHESIS, CHARACTERIZATION AND INSECT REPELLANT ACTIVITY OF SOME CHALCONE DERIVATIVES

Abstract

Four chalcone derivatives: 1,3-diphenylprop-2-en-1-one (AA1), 1-(4-nitrophenyl)-3-phenylprop-2-en-1-one (AA2), 1-phenyl-3-(3,4,5- trimethoxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (AA3) and 1-(4-nitrophenyl)-3-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl) prop-2-en-1-one (AA4) were synthesized by Claisen-Schmidt condensation of functionalized acetophenone with benzaldehyde derivatives. The synthesized compounds were characterized by spectroscopic procedures (IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and GC-MS). The compounds were obtained in good yield and their purity was ascertained with TLC and by melting point. The preliminary insect repellant activity of the compounds on Callosobruchus maculatus (cowpea weevil) was also determined. Chalcones AA1, AA3 and AA4 were highly repellant, moderately repellant and highly repellant respectively while AA2 displayed insecticidal activity.
