Spectrophotometric technique was used to determine the concentration of quinine in tonic water samples. Three brands of tonic water (Schweppes, Nirvana and Teem), obtained from Togo’s supermarket in Makurdi, and were analyzed spectrophometrically. Using the standard calibration curve obtained from quinine standard solutions of 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0ppm in a 1 cm cuvette at 347.5nm, the concentration of quinine in tonic water samples were determined using the least square method to be 35.20 for schweppes, 34.29ppm for Nirvana and 34.80ppm for teem with mean value of (34.76 ± 0.46)ppm. From the result obtained, it shows that the concentration of quinine in the tonic water sample are in accordance with the standard set by the Food and Drug Administration for Quinine content in tonic water.Downloads
