Abstract

Extracts of Hyptis suaveolens were prepared using different solvents which are ethyl acetate, methanol, chloroform and acetone. The extracts were screened for their antimicrobial activities . Methanol extract was found to be most active. Phytochemical screening and quantity estimation of detected phytochemicals were investigated on the most active extract which is the methanol extract. It revealed the presence of alkaloid and flavonoid  in the methanol extract. Quantity estimation tests on the methanol extract also revealed that the alkaloid is 22 %, flavonoid is 18 %. The result obtained revealed that the higher quantity of bioactive compounds in the methanol extract may be responsible for the high antimicrobial activities of this extract. The high antimicrobial activities of Hyptis suaveolens may be responsible to the traditional usage of the plant in the treatment diarrhea and various kidney diseases, flatulence, stomach problems and fever associated with colds.
