Abstract

Phytochemical screening and antimicrobial activities of chloroform and ethyl acetate Extracts of Physalis angulata were carried out using standards methods. The results obtained showed the absence of terpenoid, phlobatannins in chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts. Tannins and phlobatannins were not detected in chloroform extract and in ethyl acetate extract. Anthraquinone was detected in in chloroform extracts but absent in ethyl acetate. Glycosides, saponin, stereoids, alkaloids and flavonoid are presents in the both extracts. The results of the antimicrobial activity obtained from the extracts of the leaf of P. angulata revealed that all the crudes extracts of the leaves inhibited or exhibited antibacterial activity against Salmonella spp, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. Chloroform extract did not inhibit or exhibit antifungal activity against Candidas albican and Aspergillus nigger but the ethyl acetate extract exhibited inhibition against both Candidas albican and Aspergillus nigger by the extracts of chloroform and ethyl acetate. The detection of some phytochemicals is an indication that Physalis angulata can be seen as a potential source of useful drugs preparation. The claim by the traditional medicine practitioner can also be justified.
